Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand would like to congratulate its newest life members, FCAs, and New Year and Australia Day honours recipients.

Congratulations to our new life members
Life membership is the highest honour bestowed by CA ANZ and it recognises the exceptional careers and service of senior members of the profession. Four members were elevated to life membership in 2022: Caji DeSouza FCA, Derek Parkin FCA, John Shewan FCA and Jan West FCA.
Ignatius Cajetan ‘Caji’ DeSouza FCA

Caji DeSouza became a CA ANZ member in 1974 and a fellow in 1979. He held a number of senior roles at the Metropolitan Permanent Building Society (subsequently Metway Bank) and assisted in the merger of Metway Bank with Suncorp Group and the Queensland Industry Development Corporation in 1996, forming the largest publicly listed company in the state.
DeSouza has served as president of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry Queensland, Building Societies Institute in Australia and New Zealand, Institute of Internal Auditors, Queensland Chapter, and Mortgage Banks Association, Queensland Branch.
He has volunteered his expertise through the Queensland Chartered Accountants Advisory Group (CAAG), the Finance and Investment Committee of St Vincent de Paul Queensland, Opportunity International and Lifeline. He was awarded the then-ICAA (Institute of Chartered Accountants in Australia) Meritorious Service Award in 2004.
Derek Parkin OAM FCA FAICD

A CA ANZ member since 1983 and fellow since 1993, Derek Parkin was a partner at Arthur Andersen and Ernst & Young. His 30 years in the profession included roles in Africa, Europe, the US and Australia.
From 2003 to 2020, Parkin applied his experience at the University of Notre Dame Australia, as a professor of accounting, associate dean and dean of the university’s School of Business.
He is currently the independent chairman of Southern Cross Electrical Engineering and independent chair of the Australian Medical Association (WA) Audit and Risk Management Committee.
Parkin has contributed to ICAA/CA ANZ through roles on the board and multiple committees. He has volunteered with the Anglican Schools Commission and the advisory boards of Curtin University’s School of Business, among others.
In 2011 Parkin received the then-ICAA Meritorious Service Award and was awarded a Medal of the Order of Australia in the General Division in 2015 for “service to accountancy through a range of professional, academic, business and advisory roles”.
John Shewan CNZM FCA

Commencing his career in 1976 as a junior lecturer at Victoria University of Wellington, John Shewan joined Barr Burgess and Stewart (now PwC) in 1978, as a founding member of the firm’s tax practice. He became a partner in 1983 and was chairman from 2003 until his retirement in 2012.
A CA ANZ member since 1981, Shewan was actively involved in the leadership of the National Tax Committee (now CA ANZ’s New Zealand Tax Advisory Group). He became a CA ANZ fellow in 1993.
Shewan has held a number of governance roles, including chair of Munich Reinsurance Company of Australasia, the Fonterra Shareholders’ Fund, Yealands Wines and China Construction Bank.
His government-appointed roles include 10 years as chair of the Tax Education Office and leading the 2016 government inquiry into the Foreign Trust Disclosure Rules.
Shewan was appointed a Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit for services to business in 2012. He is also a Hunter Fellow and recipient of the Distinguished Alumni Award from Victoria University of Wellington.
Janet ‘Jan’ West AM FCA FAICD

Jan West has been a CA ANZ member since 1978. She became a fellow in 1994 and received the Meritorious Service Award in 2002.
She was appointed the first female partner in the Australian arm of Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu in 1988. Her career at the firm spanned 36 years, including 23 years as partner.
West is currently a non-executive director of ImpediMed and a member of the audit and risk committees of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, and Department of Treasury and Finance Victoria.
Her involvement with ICCA/CA ANZ spans multiple councils and committees and, in 2001, she was elected the first female president and chair of the board.
West was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) for service to the accountancy profession and the community in 2007, and awarded the Centenary Medal for service to the Australian society through accounting in 2001. She also received a Distinguished Service Award from Australian Red Cross in 2018.

Michael Fuller APM, Affiliate Member (NSW) – Officer (AO) in the General Division of the Order of Australia for distinguished service to law enforcement as Commissioner of Police in New South Wales and to criminal intelligence governance.
Merran Kelsall FCA (Vic) – Officer (AO) in the General Division of the Order of Australia for distinguished service to the financial accounting sector, to professional organisations, and to the community.
Victor Hoog Antink FCA (Qld) – Member (AM) in the General Division of the Order of Australia for significant services to the property industry and to corporate governance.
Sarah Merridew FCA (Tas) – Member (AM) in the General Division of the Order of Australia for significant service to corporate governance, and to the Tasmanian community.
Stephen Scudamore FCA (WA) – Member (AM) in the General Division of the Order of Australia for significant service to business and commerce, and to the mining and resources sector.
Kristin Stubbins FCA (NSW) – Member (AM) in the General Division of the Order of Australia for significant service to the financial sector, to women, and to the community.
Robyn Pearson-Robertson FCA (SA) – Medal (OAM) of the Order of Australia in the General Division for service to business.
The late Geoffrey McNiel Ellison (past member) (NSW) – Medal (OAM) of the Order of Australia in the General Division for service to the community through a range of organisations.
CA ANZ fellowship nominations now open
CA ANZ fellowship recognises members for their outstanding career achievements and contributions to the profession, business and the community. Any full CA, ACA or AT member may be nominated for fellowship but, as a guide, most members would need around 15 years of membership to achieve the required level of seniority.
To become a fellow, two full CA ANZ members must nominate you; you cannot nominate yourself. Nominations are accepted between April and July each year and fellowships are conferred annually in November or December.
