Climate action: Four TED Talks to watch

Bold ideas and practical solutions in these TED Talks offer hope on climate change, alongside actions to take now.

In brief

  • TED Talks about climate action span a wide range of topics – from potential solutions to innovations already driving sustainable change.
  • Learn how businesses and investors can not only reduce their footprint but also help advance emerging technologies.
  • Discover practical tools already tackling emissions, from carbon credits to methane tracking.

From innovative solutions and urgent calls to action to stories of resilience and hope, TED Talks continue to shape how we think about the climate crisis.

These four videos offer fresh perspectives – highlighting practical ways governments, businesses and individuals can drive meaningful change.

1. Tax the Rich – and Save the Planet

Run time: 11 mins

What it’s about: by 2100, rising temperatures could lead to an additional six million deaths, mostly in low- and middle-income countries. In this talk, Nobel Prize-winning economist Esther Duflo argues that emissions from wealthy nations impose a significant economic burden on more vulnerable countries, amounting to an estimated US$1.7 trillion annually when measured against the value of human life. She frames this as a “moral debt” and proposes that it be addressed through fairer taxation of the world’s wealthiest individuals and corporations. The funds, she suggests, could then be directed toward vulnerable communities to support climate resilience.

2. 4 Hard Truths about Capitalism and Climate

Run time: 15 mins

What it’s about: how can capitalism be part of the climate solution? Steve Howard, vice chairman of sustainability at global investment firm Temasek, urges investors to adopt a mindset that prioritises long-term value over short-term profits. He argues that economic growth is dependent on an inclusive, resilient economy where we tackle climate change, and calls for greater investment in green products and technologies. Howard emphasises that leaders in business and finance have a responsibility to back sustainable industries, which will in turn accelerate a green industrial revolution and build more resilient, future-ready economies.

3. The Controversial Climate Tool Funding Real Change

Run time: 9 mins

What it’s about: climate equity entrepreneur Sandeep Roy Choudhury responds to criticism of carbon credits by outlining their potential benefits, including ecosystem restoration, climate resilience and support for local communities and livelihoods. While acknowledging that some projects have fallen short, he explains how risk is managed and argues that scepticism can discourage progress. Choudhury makes the case for continuing to refine and use carbon credits as a tool for meaningful climate action.

4. The Best Way to Lower Earth’s Temperature – Fast

Run time: 9 mins

What it’s about: In the short term, methane is at least 80 times more potent than carbon dioxide at trapping heat in the atmosphere and is the second-largest contributor to climate change. In this talk, Daniel Zavala-Araiza, a senior scientist at the Environmental Defense Fund, explains how better data can help hold methane emitters accountable. He discusses monitoring tools – from handheld devices to airborne and satellite sensors – that can pinpoint oil and gas activity and provide near real-time emissions data. This improved transparency supports initiatives such as the EU Methane Regulation, helping to reduce methane emissions and slow climate change.
