Six podcasts rethinking mental health

Looking for a podcast about mental health? Here are six local shows that inform, inspire and help reduce stigma.

In brief

  • Mental health conditions affect one in five Australians and one in three New Zealanders, with higher rates common among people who work in financial services.
  • Podcasts that focus on mental health issues can raise awareness, reduce stigma and share individual experiences.
  • These podcasts offer insights into various mental health conditions and the personal stories of those living with them.

Every year, one in five people in Australia and one in three people in New Zealand experience a mental health condition. Studies suggest these rates are often higher among workers in the financial services sector.

Understanding this vital aspect of wellbeing is important and research shows that listening to mental health-themed podcasts can offer several benefits, such as raising awareness, reducing stigma and sharing insights from people with lived experience.

But with so many mental health-themed podcasts now available, how do you find one that’s right for you? We’ve shortlisted some standout shows from Australia and New Zealand that cover a range of topics.

1. Not Alone

Produced by mental health organisation Beyond Blue, this podcast features everyday Australians telling stories about their mental health, from how they overcame the trauma of bullying to navigating social anxiety or managing depression at work.

2. It’s Not What You Think

Obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) is often characterised by repetitive behaviours like handwashing, but that’s just one aspect of a highly complex mental health issue. 3. Minding Your Mind

In this podcast, mental health expert Professor Ian Hickie and broadcaster James O’Loghlin discuss an assortment of topics relating to mental health – from specific conditions to mindsets, dreams and beliefs. Past episodes have examined the rise of GPs treating ADHD in Australian adults, making good decisions and learning from failure.

4. The Imperfects

Hugh van Cuylenburg, founder of The Resilience Project, hosts this podcast with his brother Josh and friend Ryan Shelton – speaking to a variety of people as they share their ‘imperfections’. Past guests include Olympian Cate Campbell, former rugby league player Joe Williams and artist Vincent Fantauzzo.

5. Hope is Real

Mental health advocate Jazz Thornton interviews people from around the world, who share their stories about everything from borderline personality disorder (BPD) to post-natal depression. Past episodes have delved into how to break the cycle of addiction, be kinder to yourself and deal with loss.

6. Open Minded

Hosted by All Black legend and mental health advocate Sir John Kirwan, this podcast seeks to help listeners improve their wellbeing and performance, both personally and professionally. Kirwan and his guests – including experts, business leaders and community advocates – share real-life stories about performing under pressure, recovering from setbacks and supporting others to achieve their potential.
