Big four turn to specialist tax AI
CAs are calling it “the MTG on steroids”. ANZ tax tool Law Cyborg is now used by more than 1000 ANZ firms, including the big four. Brought to you by Law Cyborg.
Now used by RSM, PKF, William Buck, big four firms and more than a thousand others, Law Cyborg is taking the accounting world by storm. Baqir Hussain, director of tax advisory firm Finex, called Law Cyborg “game changing for the industry”, adding that it has “supercharged” his practice’s tax research.
But what is Law Cyborg, why has it become so popular and where does its unusual name come from?
Law Cyborg is best described as a hyper-tax-technical ChatGPT, built specifically for tax law. The tool started in New Zealand but expanded in 2025 to cover Australia as well.
Former tax lawyer and founder of Law Cyborg, Andrew Wierda, says the company’s odd name comes from “a deeply held philosophy that AI providers should work to augment professionals’ abilities and ensure that they can bring the best of both machines and themselves, to helping their clients”.
Wierda says he founded the company in 2023 “because existing legal and tax search tools were disappointing”, adding that he is now “jealous of those in the profession who get to use amazing new tools to solve client problems”.
Behind the company
Law Cyborg has 16 full-time staff and has raised seed capital from several prominent investors, including PwC’s former head of tax and the former solicitor-general of New Zealand.
Its growth has been driven primarily through word of mouth, as users realise how much more powerful Law Cyborg is than other tools. Recently, the company has also become a partner in the CA ANZ Members Benefits Program, and now CA ANZ members can exclusively claim one free month of access to Law Cyborg’s tool to test its capabilities.
The company hosts the tool with Amazon Web Services at a data centre in Sydney, ensuring that Australian client data remains onshore. This is an important consideration for regulated industries, where data sovereignty may be a requirement of operations.
Subscriptions to Law Cyborg are A$39 per user, per month, with an unlimited number of queries. Wierda says the price point is intended to be affordable for solo and small practitioners, as well as something that he has seen fit easily into the budget of larger firms.
