Three TED Talks on the power of technology

From robot butlers to sustainable cities of the future, we look at the hot technology topics being discussed on TED Talks.

In brief

  • TED Talks provide a valuable way to stay informed about emerging tech trends and innovations.
  • These three talks examine some of the ways technology is reimagining humanity.
  • Discover the urgent need for responsible AI development, get a hopeful glimpse of Earth 100 years from now and meet a real-life robot butler.

Technology is evolving faster than ever, reshaping how we live, work and connect. One way to keep up with the latest innovations is to tune into TED Talks, which offer insights into what our technology-driven future might hold – from humanoid robot butlers in every household to more sustainable, smarter cities.

Whether you’re curious, cautious or excited about the possibilities, these three talks highlight the opportunities – and challenges – of the rapidly changing technological landscape.

1. Why AI is our ultimate test and greatest invitation

Run time: 15 mins

What it’s about: If the pioneers of social media had considered the probable consequences of their creations – such as doomscrolling, addiction and loneliness – we might have avoided what technologist Tristan Harris calls a “societal catastrophe”. In this TED Talk, he warns against repeating the same mistake with AI. Harris argues it’s “insane” not to set proper guardrails around such powerful and unpredictable technology, a path we’re currently taking in our rush to roll out new AI capabilities. Still, he remains hopeful that by recognising the risks, we can take meaningful steps to reduce them.

2. What Earth in 2125 could look like

Run time: 6 mins

What it’s about: This animated video paints an optimistic picture of life 100 years from now, showing how three cities have tackled challenges such as traffic congestion and pollution to become more sustainable. While it may seem overly hopeful at first, writer and producer Iseult Gillespie explains that this future can be built using tools that already exist, citing real-world examples of natural technologies and renewable energy in use today. It’s a great watch if you’re feeling overwhelmed by the climate crisis.

3. Meet NEO, your robot butler in training

Run time: 16 mins

What it’s about: Robot butlers have long been a fixture in pop culture, but we’re now closer than ever to making them a reality. In this talk and live demo we meet NEO – a humanoid robot built to handle household tasks such as laundry, dishes and vacuuming. Bernt Børnich, roboticist and founder of 1X (NEO’s creator), explains that while humanoid robots in industrial settings like factories stop learning after short periods, placing them in homes exposes them to a wider range of tasks, increasing their ability to learn and eventually work autonomously. Household robot helpers could potentially support an ageing population, Børnich proposes, while also freeing up owners’ time to focus on what they enjoy.
