Charging towards an electric future

Making the switch to an electric vehicle is a lot easier with the introduction of a monthly all-inclusive subscription service. Brought to you by Origin.

As Australia’s charging infrastructure expands and vehicle prices continue to decline, an increasing number of individuals and businesses are making the switch to electric vehicles (EVs) each year. More than 300,000 EVs are estimated to be on the roads in early 2025, reflecting a growing shift toward electrifying transport.

According to the Electric Vehicle Council, EV adoption surged in 2024, with 9.53% of all new cars sold being electric, representing a 150% increase from 2022.

This rapid growth highlights the rising consumer confidence in EVs, driven by improved affordability, greater model availability and government incentives supporting the transition to electrifying transport mobility.

Now, with the Electric Vehicle Council’s aim of reaching one million EVs on Australia’s roads by the end of 2027, or approximately 5% of Australia’s passenger and light commercial vehicle fleet, new opportunities are emerging to help people make the transition from the petrol pump to electric.

Accessible entry point

One innovative business model that is providing an accessible entry point is a monthly subscription service. For example, Origin’s EV 360 Subscription allows consumers to test an electric vehicle, with the option of purchasing it after a few years.*

The subscription fee covers registration, insurance, maintenance and other expenses, and allows users to enjoy access to a diverse selection of EV models, from budget-friendly to premium vehicles like BMW, Audi and Mercedes.

Unlike a traditional vehicle lease which requires a long-term commitment and credit checks, an EV subscription offers greater flexibility, says Chau Le, general manager, eMobility at Origin Energy.

Following feedback from customers who wanted to try an EV but were apprehensive about the cost and charging options, Origin developed a subscription service to help both business and consumer customers make the transition to an EV more quickly.

Removing uncertainty

Origin has been providing charging solutions to EV drivers for more than a decade.

“When we speak to customers, they’re really keen on trialling an EV but because they’re not certain about charging or they have range anxiety or they’re just not sure whether it works for their lifestyle, they’re a bit hesitant to make that initial switch,” says Le.“That’s why, in addition to charging, we created and launched this product to really help customers, whether they be business customers or consumers, make that first jump to an EV.

“Our goal is to remove the uncertainty, making the switch as flexible and seamless as possible,” she says.

The flexibility includes swapping cars more frequently, cancelling with shorter notice and without termination fees, and bundling costs like insurance, maintenance and registration into one monthly payment.*

“This lower-risk model allows people to experience electric driving, before committing to ownership,” Le says.

Driving greater flexibility

With more than 55 models available, Le says the subscription cost depends on the type of EV, which range from affordable models to luxury and premium brands.

“A lot of small businesses are really interested in the subscription because, unlike traditional leases, they don’t need to go through a credit check and they’re not locked into a four-year finance agreement,” adds Le.

“It’s completely flexible.”
