Amateur triathlete Alice Norton CA recently began pole dancing for fitness and was surprised at the demands on her strength and co-ordination.
“I’ve got to have so much courage to let go and trust myself,” Norton says. She applies similar focus to her work as a senior financial accountant for agri-technology co-operative Livestock Improvement Corporation (LIC), in the rich pastoral region of Waikato, New Zealand – and as a volunteer.
As a trustee for Te Waka, Waikato’s Regional Economic Development Agency, she helps nurture growth for local businesses, and as treasurer for Patients’ Rights Advocacy Waikato Inc., she assists in empowering people who have a variety of health issues.
“If I can give back then I should, that’s why I choose to volunteer,’’ she says. “My mother-in-law told me Patients’ Rights didn’t have a treasurer and they weren’t sure what they’d do if I didn’t do it. Becoming the treasurer was a small thing I could do so why wouldn’t I?
“If I can give back then I should, that’s why I choose to volunteer.”
“All accountants should volunteer because it’s important to give back to our communities,” she says.
She recently moved from DairyNZ to the farmer-owned co-operative LIC, which aims to improve farmer prosperity.
“I sometimes take for granted the skills I’ve learnt throughout my career and think it’s normal but these are valuable skills – understanding how an organisation works from a financial and business perspective and being able to add value.”
Norton was recently named the CA ANZ 2019 Young CA Regional Advocate, Waikato. She is one of 12 Young CA Regional Advocates, who are shortlisted for the 2019 President’s Prize, to be announced in late 2019. The prize recognises CA ANZ members under 35 who have made an outstanding commitment to the accounting profession and have used their skills in service of their local community.
