Prevention is better than cure
Getting the most out of health insurance means using it proactively, not just reactively. Brought to you by HCF.
The right insurance policy can do more than simply help when you need immediate care, it can prevent health events from happening in the first place. That’s why HCF offers corporate cover options that waive the typical two month waiting period for many extras, including general dental and physio.
Some serious health conditions can be prevented if caught early and addressed. The Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW) reported that in 2019-20, 66,809 serious dental problems that needed hospitalisation could’ve been prevented with early intervention.
“Extras cover can really nudge people to get seen early,” says Julie Macey, HCF’s head of ancillary benefits. Below are some ways you can maximise the benefits of your extras cover.
Health interventions
Sydney-based GP Dr Anjali Didi specialises in women’s health, geriatrics, nutrition and gut health. She says around 75% of the cases she sees could be prevented.
“Obesity is the biggest factor,” says Didi. “Due to the pandemic, we’ve had a metabolic change due to a lack of incidental exercise, so we’re seeing people’s cholesterol markers a little bit higher. Just a 5% increase in your weight can change blood pressure and cholesterol.”
AIHW reports that 7% of the overall health burden in Australia is caused by overweight and obesity issues. That’s one reason why HCF offers industry-leading health and wellbeing programs, such as Healthy Weight for Life, to help members live happier, healthier lives.
Another common lifestyle change over the last two years that may be affecting our short and long-term health is working from home.
“Visiting a healthcare professional like a physiotherapist may help prevent repetitive strain injury or musculoskeletal conditions that are being caused by the ergonomic set-up many of us have at home,” says Didi.
Mental health is also a serious issue, one that people are sometimes reluctant to address early or acknowledge. But you don’t have to wait before seeking help.
To help you find support, HCF offers eligible members* the ability to claim one-to-one telehealth services for selected extras from recognised HCF providers until 31 December 2022 (contact HCF to find out more and check eligibility). If you’re concerned about your mental wellbeing, Didi recommends talking to your GP as a first step. If you’re struggling now and need someone to talk to, call Lifeline on 13 11 14.
Prevention is always best
No matter your age, looking after your health is always a smart choice. Extras cover gives people the perfect reason to make the time. Not only can HCF’s great value corporate cover for CA ANZ members waive the ordinary two month waiting periods for extras, the fund has committed to freezing premiums at current rates until 1 November 2022.
“As Australians face ongoing challenges to their health and wellbeing, we are keeping our promise of not profiting from the pandemic,” says CEO of HCF, Sheena Jack.
