Passionate industry advocate

Sophie Hill CA’s willingness to be a buddy to graduates is one reason she’s the 2019 Young CA Regional Advocate, TAS.

  • Sophie Hill CA has been recently named the CA ANZ 2019 Young CA Regional Advocate, TAS.
  • Hill wants to end the stereotype that accountants aren’t passionate about what they do.

Sophie Hill CA is a business analyst at the Department of Communities Tasmania, a role she took up in July after working for the state’s Department of Treasury and Finance.

“What I most enjoy is providing reports and advice to the government,” Hill says. “By giving my best advice to those who are on the front line, I help them deliver their services. It feels like giving back in a small way to the state of Tasmania.”

She is also a CA ANZ Tasmanian Regional Councillor and a committee delegate member of the Young Professionals Network of Tasmania.

The change she would most like to see in the accounting industry is an end to the stereotype that accountants aren’t passionate about what they do, or do boring work.

“I have been fortunate enough to work with and meet many passionate and compassionate people in the profession,” she says. “They have a wide range of interests and are conscientious members of the community.”

Hill also acts as a mentor-buddy to those just starting out in accounting. She encourages them to strive to “tell stories through numbers”, as she was inspired to do after hearing 2018 CA ANZ President, Jane Stanton FCA, speak.

“The importance of communication within accounting cannot be underestimated,” she says. “It’s not just about numbers. Our value add is in the stories we tell to inform decision-makers.”
