In Brief
- I qualified as an Australian chartered accountant in 1980. In 1983 I was appointed a justice of the peace in Western Australia.
- I had the opportunity to represent the state as chair of Regional Council. This was a fantastic time for me with numerous highlights during this period including presenting a certificate to a member for 75 years of membership and it was absolutely wonderful to work with the staff at CA ANZ.
- Being recognised by my peers for the work I’ve done in the various areas meant the world to me.
1975
After gaining my qualification in 1975, my wife and I, and our two young sons – aged three and eight months – migrated to Australia in 1978. We moved to Perth and I started working in a firm of CAs undertaking a 12-month apprenticeship before applying for membership at the Institute of Chartered Accountants in Australia (what it was then known as). I qualified as an Australian chartered accountant in 1980. In 1983 I was appointed a justice of the peace in Western Australia.
1997
I love running – though I no longer compete due to an ongoing knee injury – and in 1997 I competed in my first marathon. I have completed 20 marathons: 12 in Perth, six in Bunbury WA, one at Rottnest Island and in Vancouver, Canada I ran a half marathon. In 2000 I ran in the Host City Marathon, the forerunner to the Sydney Olympic Games. That was an amazing experience.
2018
I had the opportunity to represent the state as chair of Regional Council. This was a fantastic time for me with numerous highlights during this period including presenting a certificate to a member for 75 years of membership and it was absolutely wonderful to work with the staff at CA ANZ. I was part of the CA ANZ National Public Practice Advisory Committee for many years and the WA chair for a few years. As chair I travelled to Sydney and New Zealand once a year for meetings with fellow CAs. I am also a member of the CA ANZ Chartered Accountants Advisory Group (CAAG), which offers support and mentoring on professional and ethical matters. This is a very rewarding group to be involved in.
2021
In 2021 I was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List in the general division. I was recognised for the award by providing services to the community for my work as a justice of the peace, at various signing centres in the Perth area, including police headquarters. I was also recognised for services to numerous not-for profit organisations and committees.
2022
Being recognised by my peers for the work I’ve done in the various areas meant the world to me. As a result, in 2022 I was invited to be a patron to a group of new recruits at the Western Australian Police Academy (pictured with former police commissioner and current governor of Western Australia, Chris Dawson, left). In this role I will mentor new recruits and help them on their path in the police force.
