Life started in Brookby, on the outskirts of Auckland. I had a rural upbringing in Whitianga on the Coromandel Peninsula until I started university. I began my journey towards a CA career by entering Waikato University’s Bachelor of Management Studies program.
After graduating in 1990, I spent two months exploring Europe. That experience – where I picked up a piece of the Berlin Wall – ignited my love of travel. Following graduation, I landed my first accounting role at Ernst & Young.
One of my proudest moments was making partner at Hudson Kasper Auckland in 1999. Another was being selected, as one of 20, for the inaugural Air New Zealand Triathlon Pro series.
Being passionate about physical fitness has helped me meet the demands of life in public practice. Here I am at the top of Mount Ventoux, one of four major climbs we achieved while following the 2005 Tour de France. It was 20 kilometres of climbing to an elevation of over 1900 metres. What a ride!
Becoming the Auckland audit representative for international accounting network Kreston in 2008 led to more great travel opportunities. Cancun, Cuba, Beijing, Vancouver and Shanghai were some of the best. Here I am skiing with the Barcelona member of Kreston.
In 2013, my son and I spent some time living in Spain. He went to the local school in Nerja, Andalucía, while I ran my practice remotely. We became fluent in Spanish!
I went to Kiribati in 2015 to audit the Phoenix Islands Protected Area Conservation Trust. The Trust’s aim is to protect the remaining pristine environments in Micronesia. The trip was an eye-opener. The outer islands of Kiribati are undeniably beautiful and pristine, but Tarawa Atoll, where most people live, is floating on a sea of rubbish.
2018 - 19
In June 2019, I set up Forbes Audit + Accounting, my own specialist audit firm in Parnell, Auckland, where I employ three staff. It’s good to have a home base.
