Two years ago, Joshua Robb became chair of the Bean Counters Ball, a charity that holds a gala ball annually.
The ball is a joint initiative between Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand and CPA Australia. Half of the proceeds go to Samaritans, which provides accommodation for disadvantaged youth. The remaining half is donated to the Hunter TAFE Foundation, which provides scholarships to those unable to finish their High School Certificate.
“A lot of people don’t come from the privileged position that we have, so I think it’s important to help those who haven’t been as fortunate.”
“A lot of people don’t come from the privileged position that we have, so I think it's important to help those who haven't been as fortunate.”
The event also provides an opportunity for professionals to build their networks.
“I think network building is vital but many of the younger generation don’t seem to fully understand its importance.”
Robb spent 12 weeks last year organising the ball, which involves securing sponsorship and persuading organisations to donate prizes. This year, he assumed the co-chair role. He believes “fresh ideas” are important to help the ball continue to grow.
In his role at SV Partners, Robb specialises in insolvency; he predicts next year will be a busy one for the sector, as the economy continues to weaken.
“We’ve had a strong economy for the past 10 years but we know that the economy goes in cycles.”
Robb was recently named the CA ANZ 2019 Young CA Regional Advocate – NSW. He is one of 12 Young CA Regional Advocates, who are shortlisted for the 2019 President’s Prize, to be announced in late 2019. The prize recognises CA ANZ members under 35 who have made an outstanding commitment to the accounting profession and have used their skills in service of their local community.
