Titled A Spoonful of SEO Makes the Cash Register Ring, the latest episode of the Acuity podcast features hosts Mike Lynch and Andy McLean in conversation with Michiel Heijmans, COO of renowned search engine optimisation company, Yoast.

Founded in 2006 and based in the Netherlands, Yoast is considered a global leader in SEO, particularly for Wordpress websites.

In episode five (above) of the Acuity podcast, Heijmans details how businesses can use SEO to drive traffic to their website and compete successfully online.

“You can have a great website and have visitors, but in the end the reason for your website is to get more traffic and get more people to buy your products,” Heijmans says.

“One of the main reasons that people who don’t know your business go to your website is because they find you in Google. SEO is really important because you can actually control how many people come to your website and buy your product. Good SEO in one sentence would be answering the question that your soon to be customer has.”

While SMBs may not have the marketing budget to engage specialist agencies to improve their SEO, that doesn’t necessarily mean they can’t take steps to implement SEO best practice and compete with larger businesses.

Heijmans says SMBs can start by look internally for ways to improve their SEO.

“When you look at SEO holistically, SEO is not just optimising the technical stuff on your website, for which you might need an agency,” Heijmans says in episode five of the Acuity podcast. “It’s also about writing great content and promoting your content on social media; it’s a huge range of things you can do to improve your website.

“You are the number one resource for the knowledge that is in your company and products. If you share your knowledge in the right way and to the right audience, that might get you some rankings above all the huge companies with huge budgets.”
