The 1980s to early 2000
I was born in India, but from age eight I started globetrotting with my parents as my dad pursued his higher studies. It was first to New Zealand (Auckland and Dunedin), then Malaysia (Kuala Lumpur), then Australia (Hobart and Brisbane). I completed my schooling from grade 10 on in Hobart. I wasn’t keen on being in the classroom – I loved to play sports and dream. So, credit to my dad for encouraging and inspiring me to take up accounting. Also, my mum for providing the important environment to support my endeavours.
2009–2014
I landed a graduate job with Deloitte in Hobart during the global financial crisis in 2009 and went on to complete my CA. I wasn’t sure which area of accounting I wanted to pursue, so I was lucky they recruited me into the business advisory and tax area. I instantly enjoyed helping clients solve their tax issues and looked forward to meeting and interacting with clients. But I always had a desire to do something on my own and in my own way.
After I became a tax agent in 2014, I didn’t really know whether I should start something on my own or go into a partnership or a franchise. I married Soumya in 2013, who was a great support and adviser during the crucial years that lay ahead.
2014–2018
In 2014 we moved to Brisbane. After working with a mid-tier firm in the city for a couple of years, I finally decided to take the plunge and started my own business in 2017 – Success Tax Professionals Nundah.2018–2021
The business took off quickly. Within the Success Tax Professionals network (there are about 90 franchisees), we have been in the top 10 fastest growing accounting firms for the past three years. In 2021, our practice won a bronze Stevie Award (at the International Business Awards) and was a finalist in the Xero Awards in recognition of the extra support we provided to our clients, our resilience through COVID-19 and our commitment to giving back to the community.
I am incredibly grateful to partner with the Heart of Love Foundation (Australia) charity. In collaboration with them we have initiated a free service providing freshly home-cooked meals to a group of needy individuals and families every single week.
Through this charity arm we have helped deliver hampers, feed the homeless and provided support in establishing free hospitals and schools in multiple countries. 2021 was an incredibly rewarding year in many ways but, most importantly for Soumya and me, it will be remembered for the birth of our first child, Nachiket.
